The song's protagonist, in the iconic 1964 version of the song by British band the Animals, is called back to the mysterious Rising Sun, knowing full well that it will spell his doom. "There is a house in New Orleans/ they call the Rising Sun." The words alone are capable of conjuring up memories of the famous curling opening guitar line, and the sneering, keening voice of singer Eric Burdon as he rides that deathless riff.
